Healthcare Administrative Partners, Abington Jefferson Health Published in The BMJ

Media, PA, May 14, 2019 – A scholarly article written by Healthcare Administrative Partners’ (HAP) Development Team and Abington Jefferson Health’s Steering Committee for Radiology Follow-up has recently been published in The BMJ.

The article titled Process improvement for follow-up radiology report recommendations of lung nodules is featured in the April 2019 Volume 8, Issue 2 of BMJ Open Quality. Abington’s Dr. Philip Lim, MD, MRMD, Dr. Doron Schneider, MD, FACP, Dr. Jonathan Sternlieb, MD, FACG, Dr. Michael Taupin, MD, Dr. Nicholas Sich, MD, Joan Diaz, MSRT® CRA, and Eileen Jameson PT, MHA, DPT, CRA along with HAP’s Bryan Frambes, Sr. Application Architect, and Sharon Taylor, CPHIMS, Chief Clinical Informatics Officer, are named as authors on the article.

The article details the teams’ efforts to improve patient return for follow-up screenings when incidental lung nodule findings were identified. Together, they developed a custom application that identifies patients with lung nodules in need of follow up, alerts the patient and primary care physician via mail, and tracks patient condition upon follow up. Ultimately, this process increased the number of patients returning for follow up from just about 26% to almost 60%.

According to lead author Dr. Philip Lim, “Communication of imaging results and follow up recommendations is truly a challenge for healthcare systems, and we are excited that we are beginning to close the loop on that important communication. We are proud to have our work on that subject recognized by The BMJ.”

Sharon Taylor notes, “Through our research, we have reduced the risk of missing potentially important clinical information – leading not only to improved patient communication, but also possibly saving lives. We are looking forward to expanding our research to other non-lung incidental findings.”
